Earned the hard way

I dig our Kentucky material by hand. Sometimes that means working the dirt with hand tools and a geopick. Other times it means hard-rock mining with a 14" gas saw and a hammer drill.

Our Kentucky fluorite takes the most work. We remove at least five feet of solid limestone before we ever reach the vein, where pockets of fluorite, calcite and dolomite wait, and sometimes chalcopyrite. We pull out a three-foot section and split it in half to open the pockets.

The site is a large outcropping fifty feet up from the road, with no trails, so it's quite primitive. Every piece is cut down small enough to carry to our vehicles, then taken home for further prep.
